Erasmus+ stands as the European Union’s initiative dedicated to fostering education, training, youth, and sport in Europe. Introduced back in 1987, the inception of the “Erasmus” program aimed to strengthen collaboration among universities and higher education institutions throughout Europe. Evolving over the years, the initiative has now transformed into Erasmus+, or Erasmus Plus, amalgamating various EU schemes for international collaboration and movement within the realms of education, training, youth, and sport across Europe and globally. Having completed its inaugural funding phase from 2014 to 2020, the ‘Erasmus+’ program is presently navigating its second cycle, spanning from 2021 to 2027.
The nomenclature traces its roots to Erasmus of Rotterdam, a preeminent scholar and captivating lecturer of the Renaissance era, renowned for his extensive travels across Europe to teach and study at various universities. Simultaneously, the term “Erasmus” also serves as the acronym for the “EuRopean Community Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students.”
