Roots & Routes:

A Taste of Greece Through Greek Cooking Day

As part of the Roots & Routes project, participants gathered in Leiden for a special Greek Cooking Day, an event dedicated to exploring Greek culture through one of its most beloved traditions: food. Bringing together young people from different cultural backgrounds, the activity combined cooking, cultural exchange, and community-building in a welcoming and interactive environment.

Food is often one of the most accessible ways to learn about a culture, and Greek cuisine offered the perfect opportunity for participants to discover new flavours while learning about traditions, history, and everyday life in Greece. Throughout the event, participants worked together to prepare and share Greek-inspired dishes, creating an atmosphere of collaboration and curiosity.

The cooking session encouraged active participation and teamwork, allowing everyone to contribute regardless of their previous cooking experience. As ingredients were prepared and recipes came to life, conversations naturally emerged about cultural traditions, family recipes, and the role food plays in bringing people together across different societies.

Beyond the kitchen, the event became a space for intercultural dialogue. Participants exchanged stories about their own culinary traditions and discovered similarities between cultures that might initially seem very different. These conversations highlighted how food can serve as a bridge between communities and create meaningful opportunities for connection.

Greek culture is widely known for its hospitality and strong sense of community, values that perfectly reflected the spirit of the Roots & Routes project. The event encouraged participants to slow down, enjoy the experience together, and build new friendships through shared activities and mutual learning.

One of the key goals of Roots & Routes is to create opportunities for local and international young people to connect in meaningful ways. The Greek Cooking Day successfully contributed to this objective by creating an inclusive space where participants felt comfortable sharing their experiences, learning from one another, and celebrating cultural diversity.

The activity also demonstrated the value of non-formal learning. Through hands-on participation, teamwork, and cultural exchange, participants developed intercultural awareness, communication skills, and a deeper appreciation for different traditions. These learning experiences are at the heart of the project’s mission to promote inclusion, solidarity, and active participation among young people.

As the meal was shared and conversations continued around the table, participants left with more than just new recipes. They gained new perspectives, strengthened existing friendships, and created memories that will remain long after the event itself.

The Roots & Routes team looks forward to continuing this journey of cultural discovery through future activities that celebrate diversity, encourage dialogue, and bring communities closer together.
