Participating in HASAVISO 3.0 in the Basque Country was a transformative journey that went far beyond a simple educational trip. Hosted in the coastal town of Hondarribia from March 1st to 10th, 2026, the project brought together 33 young people from the Netherlands, Serbia, Moldova, France, and Spain to address the pressing issue of human deterioration in the 21st century. As representatives of Stichting yEUth, we delved into a curriculum designed to combat the rising tide of mental health struggles, which have seen a sharp increase among European youth in recent years. By focusing on healthy habits as a foundation for social cohesion, the exchange challenged us to view our personal well-being as an essential component of a sustainable global future.
The daily rhythm of the project used physical activity and movement as a catalyst for deep personal reflection. We explored topics ranging from nutrition and active lifestyles to mental health and social responsibility, all through the lens of non-formal education. This approach allowed us to develop key competencies in leadership and intercultural communication while fostering a stronger sense of European identity. Living together at the Juan Sebastián Elkano Hostel, a facility that prioritizes environmental protection by forgoing high-energy appliances like washing machines and hair dryers, provided a practical setting to test our resilience and commitment to sustainable living.
Beyond the workshops, the cultural landscape of Hondarribia and the surrounding Gipuzkoa region offered a profound backdrop for our growth. Walking through medieval streets and visiting landmarks like the Emperor Charles V Castle allowed us to appreciate the intersection of tradition and modernity. This immersive experience reinforced the project’s goal of supporting inclusion and building a safe, intercultural learning environment for everyone, including those with fewer opportunities. We returned home not just with new skills, but with a renewed motivation to share these testimonies and lessons within our own community through upcoming workshops and digital dissemination.
