On 16 March 2026, participants of the Roots & Routes project gathered in Leiden for a special Turkish International Night, an event dedicated to celebrating cultural diversity and fostering intercultural understanding. The evening provided an opportunity for young people from different backgrounds to explore Turkish culture while strengthening connections within the growing Roots & Routes community.
The event was designed to create a welcoming environment where participants could learn about traditions, customs, and everyday life in Turkey through interactive discussions and cultural exchange. By bringing together local and international young people, the activity reflected the project’s mission of promoting inclusion, dialogue, and mutual understanding through shared experiences.
Throughout the evening, participants discovered various aspects of Turkish culture, from traditions and social customs to the importance of hospitality and community. The event encouraged open conversations and curiosity, allowing attendees to ask questions, exchange perspectives, and learn directly from one another’s experiences.
One of the highlights of the evening was the opportunity to share stories and cultural insights in an informal and engaging setting. Participants reflected on the similarities and differences between their own traditions and those of Turkey, creating meaningful discussions that helped build bridges between cultures.ย
The Turkish International Night also highlighted the value of intercultural learning beyond textbooks or formal education. Through direct interaction and dialogue, participants gained new perspectives and developed a greater understanding of cultural identities and traditions. Such experiences contribute to building more inclusive communities where diversity is viewed as a strength rather than a barrier.
As with all Roots & Routes activities, the event focused on creating genuine opportunities for connection. New friendships were formed, experiences were shared, and participants left with a broader understanding of both Turkish culture and the diverse cultural backgrounds represented within the group itself.
The evening served as another important step in the project’s ongoing journey of bringing people together through culture. By celebrating traditions from different parts of the world, Roots & Routes continues to create spaces where young people can learn from one another, challenge stereotypes, and build lasting relationships based on mutual respect and understanding.
As the project continues throughout the year, participants can look forward to many more cultural events that celebrate diversity and strengthen community bonds. The Turkish International Night once again demonstrated that meaningful connections often begin with curiosity, conversation, and a willingness to learn from one another.
